Hollywood Forever Boot Camp is taking a hiatus due to the extreme temperatures and hot conditions in Southern California. Because water usage is at a premium, we want to do our part to help the grass in the cemetery stay green. We are retooling the workout and will have a new option at Hollywood Forever soon. Stay tuned!
As a boy in Salt Lake City, there was a cemetery near our house. The neighborhood kids would wait until dusk, then play “hide and seek” until our folks called us in for dinner, most of us unaware of the weighty magnificence of having such a unique playground.
A lot of life has happened since then: successes, failures, re-boots–even entire system upgrades. Children born; and dear, dear ones lost. After the sudden death of my friend (and longtime personal trainer) Dirk Shafer, I decided to turn my dream of creating a soulful workout experience into a reality at Hollywood Forever cemetery. Thirty years after playing hide and seek, imagine my astonishment and gratitude to be able to make this iconic historical park home to my group exercise class: Hollywood Forever Boot Camp.
“First and foremost, it’s a celebration of life.”
What is the workout like?
If “boot camp” brings to mind screaming drill sergeants — fear not. My boot camp is designed to be both an exhilarating workout and an uplifting experience. First and foremost, it’s a celebration of life. The class is as hard as you make it, and challenging across fitness levels. We use lots of body weight, so if you have joint issues, take that into account. A typical workout involves a 10 minute warm up, 40 minutes of five rotating circuits, stretching, and a guided meditation. I’ve honed my method over thousands of hours of training during the past 11 years.

How is this workout different?
It is hard to describe the specific, spectacular significance of training your body in a place where so many legends–famous and personal–have made their final resting place. But I will try.
More than anything I have created in my career, this workout is special to me. It is one of those rare places where I have experienced a powerful juxtaposition of life and death. A metaphorical call to action. A check-in for my soul.
