Interview with Greg Engelking, Reiki Master
I MET Greg Engelking in 2001. We‘re both from the Rocky Mountain west, so we bonded immediately. Over the years our friendship has deepened and last summer, Greg administered a powerful Reiki treatment. I found myself with a new curiosity for this healing art. Recently I had the chance to interview Greg about his work as a Reiki master.
SAM PAGE: Okay Greg, so tell everyone a little about yourself.
GREG ENGELKING: I’m 38 years old, and live in Laguna Beach, CA. As you know, originally I’m from Idaho, where I received my degree in Sports Science from the University of Idaho and have been active in the field of Health and Fitness since 1988. I’ve taught and coached at the collegiate levels before relocating to Southern California where I began working and training with high performance athletes. My diverse background in the field of health and fitness extends back 19 plus years and includes working with individuals from 4-year-olds to world class athletes. These opportunities have allowed me to strengthen my inner passion and desires for assisting others in developing beyond their full potential.
Can you explain Reiki in layman’s terms? What level of training have you achieved?
Reiki (Ray-key) is a generic Japanese word roughly meaning “spiritually guided life force energy” and is described in Buddhist texts as a practice that heals the body, mind, and emotions using energy that is present throughout the Universe. It’s a powerful, yet gentle system of healing that works to bring balance, healing and lasting relief from “dis-ease” to all four levels of being: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. I’ve been trained as a Reiki Master Teacher, through the Usui system from Dan Esparza.
So, what led you to Reiki?
It found me. A close friend suggested I look into Dan’s teachings, but I didn’t follow through at that moment. I left the country and went to Russia to work with some clients for a few months and on my return, I later met another person that suggested looking into training with Dan. So I called Dan and he told me was teaching the very next day and he had room in the class if I would like to jump in and I did. Finished level I. Eight months after that I completed level II and another eight months or so I finished the Mastership.
What an amazing synchronicity. I guess that practicing Reiki has influenced your approach to fitness and wellness.
Yes, it’s allowed me to offer a more well rounded program to my clients. I have a better understanding of life and how to meet others’ needs.
I remember a Catholic priest saying that Reiki “opens the door to evil and occult forces which have later side effects.” What do you tell the “skeptical-at-heart” about Reiki?
What I can share is that Reiki is sacred knowledge of truths, gifted from Divine. Like all other things, do not judge which is right or wrong; instead, understand that each individual plays a role in the cosmic drama at this time. It’s important that one remains clear in their own understanding of what they feel is right for them. If you follow and trust your own inner guidance, you’ll never have to worry about what energies are positive or negative. Open your heart and journey forward with confidence. I’d encourage others to do their own research and self exploration. I’ve found in my life that when things are right, they come forward and present themselves at the perfect moments. When I stay clear with an open heart, all things are possible.
Can you administer Reiki to yourself?
Yes — I do it all the time.
That’s amazing. I’ve also read that some can administer Reiki from a distance. Have you ever done this?
Yes, it’s a skill that is taught at the upper levels. It’s effective, when used correctly.
Okay, so what’s the most dramatic or miraculous experience you’ve ever witnessed practicing Reiki?
Every time I work session to session, day to day, person to person each and everyone is amazing. I’m truly grateful I get to share and help others.
Does a person’s openness or attitude influence their treatment with Reiki?
To some degree, yes. But Reiki will flow to where it is most needed as well. You can only really help those who are welling to help them selves.
Does treatment with Reiki have long-term benefits. For instance, does the treatment you administered in June of 2007 still have some impact in my consciousness or spirituality?
Yes, but we are forever changing and evolving every day. Our needs are shifting with us, so it’s important stay in tune with your inner self and use that as a gauge. Pay attention to your heart, and work toward maintaining a balance.
