The Soulful Underbelly of Scott Cullens
I love learning from entrepreneurs and visionaries — people who’ve got it going on. I’m fascinated by those rare individuals who are able to fuse personality, sensuality and spirituality into a successful business: a “brand of self.” Scott Cullens is a general contractor in Palm Springs who has built a successful business by combining a strong work ethic, with design sense and spiritual principles. And then, there are his abs.
Let’s get right down to brass tacks. What is the secret to Scott Cullens’ abs?
Hanging leg raises in the straps and the roller wheel from a standing position 3x per week gives me great abs. I train abs harder than any body part.”
What have you built that you’re proudest of ?
I love building and creating things. I love building houses and my body. However, the incredible life I’ve built after getting sober is my greatest achievement. I have a family that loves me, real friends, real relationships, a connection to God, a career I am proud of, and a life I only use to dream about because the drugs and alcohol kept me from feeling worthy and realizing my potential.”
What book has had the biggest impact on you?
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra”
Who do you consider your intellectual mentor? Your spiritual mentor?
Dr. William Larkin, PhD, my sponsor.”
What do you consider to be good design?
Good design relies on the materials and space layout for art. If you need a bunch of rugs, pillows and accessories to create your design, then the space fell short. I like using the wall colors, counter and cabinet materials, tiles, flooring, lighting to create good design. Less design is more. Admittedly, my designs are prettier to look at than for humans to live in.”
If there were a movie about your life, what songs would definitely be on the soundtrack?
“You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon for sure and anything by Duran Duran because no one can explain why we loved them.”
What are you the most excited about in your life in this moment?
Planning my vacation with my 93-year-old Grandma. I have more fun hanging with her than anyone.”

What is your biggest failure so far in life, and how has it contributed to your success?
There are no mistakes. You never get it right or wrong and you never get it done. That said, if the question is about failures then I would qualify my decision to abuse drugs and alcohol at one point in my life as a failure. My biggest success was born from that failure — it is the 11 years (so far) of blissful sobriety.”
Where do you fill your soul and spirit?
I am constantly having a conversation with God. I ask The Universe for guidance every minute of the day. I try to never lose my connection even during sex, eating, exercise, whatever. God is invited in every aspect of my life. I get depressed, I lose focus, I get cranky just like everyone else. However, I am never very far from getting back on course. Happiness and joy always last longer than sadness. Always.”
