I’m Getting Married Today

Bronson (right) and I are off to a special location of the California clerk’s office in West Hollywood to get our marriage license today, the government’s recognition of our commitment ceremony which occurred on April 21, 2007.
My friend Melissa called last night to tell me to be prepared for the demonstrators she saw outside the Beverly Hills Courthouse. Luckily, I’m used to them by now — after having come out at age 21 to an “ultra religious” Utah family, and starting a national magazine about gay relationships — I’m used to dealing with those voices, which become [yawn] more unintelligible as the years pass.
But today is not about them. Today is about reflection and affirmation of our love and our relationship. It’s about celebration, because today, 39 long years after the Stonewall Riots, we finally have the same legal privileges and protections of every other Californian.
We are equal.

It won’t matter that 10,000 doors might be slammed in your face, Sam, because when door number 10,001 flies open, revealing pathways of jade and gardens of love, with flowers dancing, fountains sparkling, friends blushing, moonbeams beaming, and abundance abounding, you’ll completely forget about all the other doors.

Hi Darlings,
You know how very proud I am of you both, and though you were very much in love a year ago, your union has escalated a thousand time since then. You deserve all of the wonderful opportunities, friends, good health and trinkets of gold and silver that come your way. Congratulations, again!
I love you

Oodles of love to you two! And I have no doubt that the obvious love, genuine joy, and commitment you have in each other will never land you in the halls of Hill Street.
In a time when our government regularly lets us down, today is a day of judical sunshine for all.
Love to you and the Mr! xxoo, Claire

Congratulations. Not only is it a legal confirmation of your union, but I’m sure it must be a great feeling to know that you have achieved what so many of us will probably never have the ability to do. Rob and I are so happy for you.
(Did you wear your tuxes to the ceremony?…ha ha)

“Marriage is not a ritual or an end. It is a long, intricate, intimate dance together and nothing matters more than your own sense of balance and your choice of partner.” – Amy Bloom
You and Bronson are two souls joined together through love. No judge or magistrate could ever take that away. Your relationship reaffirms my belief that when love is true, nothing will stand in its way. I wish you every happiness.

Thanks Michael, but I’m not sure I understand when you say “what so many of us will probably never have the ability to do.” — You realize you can come to California and legally marry, right?

I think it is worth reminding those who may not be supportive that in law, “marriage” (small “m”) is just a legal term for a certain set of legal rights and privileges granted to two people by the state. Social Security benefits, rights of survivorship, hospital visitation, the ability to change one’s name or own joint property—these are civil rights protected by the government which should be equally available to all of its citizens.
Folks who object to same sex marriage are confusing “marriage” (the legal term, above) with “Marriage” (big “m”) which they associate with religious beliefs. But remember. the U.S.A. was founded on the principle of separation of church and state.
The U.S. Constitution protects the rights of ALL its citizens, not just a certain subset of those citizens (i.e., heterosexuals). By law, the U.S. will eventually extend the rights afforded to some of its citizens to all of its citizens.
Not “black” rights. Not “straight” rights. Not “gay” rights.
Human rights.
