An Open Letter to Britney Spears
“You don’t have the luxury of time /
You have got to say what’s on your mind /
Your head lost in the stars /
You’ll never go far /
It’s time for you to read the signs”—Madonna, “The Beat Goes On”
DEAR BRITNEY:
I nearly sent flowers to the hospital upon hearing word of the birth of your second child. I’d planned to enclose a sweet note that said: “When you’re ready to get your body back, call me.” But I honestly didn’t want to seem “THAT” Hollywood—you know…the trainer looking for a new celebrity client. Not that celebrity clients have eluded me. When casting asked me to come in as Paris Hilton’s trainer on the last season of “The Simple Life,” I balked. Not that I dislike Paris, but—well—she’s no BRITNEY.
You’ve said you no longer practice Kaballah, saying your kids are your religion. I don’t know if you’re still tight with Madonna or not, but her song, “The Beat Goes On,” from her new album, screams out as Madonna’s own shout out to you. Like me, she loves you, too. After all, she kissed YOU—not Christina. The torch was passed. It wasn’t meant to put you in a pressure-cooker, but you know it wasn’t an accident.
It’s also no accident that I have developed quite a following of pre-and post-natal clients here in Los Angeles. It’s no accident that I have made my own share of “interesting” (some would say questionable) life choices. A chubby ex-Mormon, I came out of the closet at age 22. I started a magazine. I declared bankruptcy. At age 26, I did porn. I’m no angel, but I cleaned up my act. Today at 33, I help other people get inspired about their own health and fitness. One by one, I watch them transform their bodies—and their lives.
If there’s one thing I’m sure of about transforming yourself, it’s this: You have to see yourself as something more than anyone else sees. Your vision of yourself must be uniquely and unapologetically yours. You are unlike any other human being in the Universe, uniquely placed at this moment in time. You have so much power (you know it already). You set a fashion trend simply by choosing shoes or wearing a dress. You influence pop music with one track. Ask yourself: Why should it be any different with your own body and soul? Where ever you place your attention—that’s what you’ll manifest.
“Say what you like
Do what you feel
You know exactly who you are
The time is right now
You got to decide
Stand in the back or be the star”
I feel like there’s something in you that is dying—or dying to get out! The self-possessed, self-confident Britney that we know and love is alive and well. When people ask me: “Do you think Britney will make a come back?” my answer is always: “The only person who knows the answer to that is Britney.”
I’ve always regretted not sending those flowers.
Sincerely Yours,
Sam
