bora bora: the undescribably pristine paradise
WHEN I WAS ASKED TO TRAVEL TO BORA BORA to interview American comedienne Kathy Griffin, I had no idea of the overwhelming beauty of this place. Sure, people told me it was their “favorite place on earth,” others said it was their “dream destination.”
That must be like telling a blind person what it’s like to see.
Flying over the water on our final approach here, I heard audible gasps from fellow passengers aboard the airplane–having nothing to do with the flight. They were reacting to their first glimpses of the ocean here. Imagine every variation of aquamarine, periwinkle, and sapphire, and you might have a faint picture of what the water is like here.
Unfortunately our digital camera broke yesterday (the lens won’t retract) so we’re shooting everything on DV video. The exchange rate here is miserable, otherwise we’d entertain purchasing a new camera. There’s no data coverage, so my brilliant plan to “microblog” via utterz.com is toast. No worries–I’ve taken it all as a sign from the Universe that it’s okay to “jack out” for seven days. You’ll just have to wait for our home made footage after we return.
Technical difficulties aside, we’re finally getting the chance to unwind after a couple of very, very long travel days (the flight to Tahiti was more than 8 hours). But I think you’ll agree that the experience of drinking champagne, pants rolled up standing in the middle of the ocean surf on your own private sandbar, makes up for any lack of leg room in the 44th row of coach.
